Takeaways From Our First Business Getaway
January 27, 2025

Let's chat about the power of stepping away in your business.

Last week, we traded this frigid Canadian cold for the sunny warmth of Florida, and took a step back from the daily grind for a weekend focused entirely on our business. And honestly? Game. Changer.

As business partners heading into our third year, we knew we needed to start the year intentionally—by taking time to work on our business instead of just in it. That simple shift of focus unlocked creativity, clarity, and motivation we didn’t even know we were missing. Now, we’re coming back feeling refreshed, aligned, and ready to take on what’s next.

Here are a few of the biggest takeaways that we brought back with us:

Environment shapes impact.

Sometimes, a change of scenery is all it takes to reset. Stepping away from the usual routine allowed us to clear our minds and approach our business with fresh eyes. Without the constant pull of emails, to-dos, and daily distractions, we finally had the space to think bigger and dive deeper into what truly matters for our goals.

Working ON your business is essential.

For a long time, we’ve been hyper-focused on putting our clients first—and while that’s still our priority, we realized that meant we often neglected our own business. This weekend was a reminder of just how important it is to take the time to work on our business, not just in it. Planning, reflecting, and dreaming are what move us forward—and without that time for strategy, we’d be left reacting instead of proactively growing.

Reflection fuels direction.

During our getaway, we spent time reflecting on both the wins and the areas that need improvement. What’s working? What needs tweaking? Gaining that clarity gave us actionable insights and a renewed sense of purpose for moving forward. We came back with actionable goals and a clearer vision of how to evolve as business owners—and as partners.

The big picture is worth investing in.

Leaving our work getaway, we felt more energized than ever. We’re walking away with a fresh sense of clarity about where we’re headed in Year 3, with a renewed focus on improving our client experience, refining our workflows, and even dreaming about exciting new opportunities (hello, annual work retreats!). We’re more aligned as a team and more focused than ever on taking our business to the next level.

Final Takeaway:
Make time to step back, reflect, and strategize.

If there’s one thing we’ve learned from this experience, it’s this...make the time to step back from the day-to-day hustle. Reflection and strategy are the foundation of meaningful growth. Taking the time to pause, reflect, and plan might just be the best thing you do for your business this year.

You ever read your own website and think… “Technically this says what I do, but wow—it sounds like it was written by a corporate ghost with no personality.” You’re not alone. And you’re definitely not boring. But your copy might be trying way too hard to sound “professional.” Which, ironically, is the fastest way to lose people’s attention. Most service providers—especially the seasoned ones—default to safe, watered-down language because they don’t want to sound unqualified. So instead of clarity, personality, or boldness, they write like: "Helping businesses grow with innovative, customized solutions." That sentence could apply to literally anyone. If you’re not naming what you actually do and who you do it for in plain, confident language… you're missing your moment to connect. Here’s what gets people to lean in: Specificity Personality A little guts Let’s flip the switch. Try these swaps: ❌ “We provide expert digital marketing services.” ✅ “We build websites that do the talking—so you can keep doing the doing.” ❌ “We’re committed to quality and customer satisfaction.” ✅ “If it’s not built to last, we don’t touch it. Simple as that.” ❌ “Schedule a consultation today.” ✅ “Let’s figure out if we’re the right crew for your next big job.” ❌ “We offer customized solutions tailored to your business.” ✅ “Whether you’re scaling up or starting fresh, we’ll make sure your brand actually looks as legit as your work.” ❌ “Contact us to learn more.” ✅ “You bring the skills. We’ll bring the strategy. Let’s make it official.” It’s not about sounding clever. It’s about sounding like you, turned all the way up—with a message that hits the right people, right away. And yes, your copy can still be strategic and smart without sounding like it was AI-generated in a navy-blue blazer. Mini Mindset Shift: Your website isn’t just an information hub. It’s a vibe check. It’s how potential clients figure out if they trust you—if they see themselves in your words. And whether they want to give you their money. That happens when you speak clearly, confidently, and like a real human who gets what they’re going through. So if your website sounds like it could belong to anyone in your industry—that’s the red flag. It should sound like you and only you. 👇 If your current site is giving “blah blah industry standard” but your business is giving “badass results and built-on-reputation,” we need to align your words with your actual value. Start by re-reading your homepage out loud. Does it sound like how you actually talk? Does it name who you help and what changes for them ? If not, it’s time to shake off the safe zone and bring the bold. Let’s make your website sound like the expert you already are.
